HGH vs Growth Hormone Secretagogues: Comparing the Research

Apr 5, 2026

One of the most common questions in growth-hormone research is the difference between supplying growth hormone directly versus using a secretagogue that prompts the body's own release. The distinction matters, and the research peptides involved work very differently.

Direct growth hormone: HGH (Somatropin, 191AA)

HGH (Somatropin, 191AA) is recombinant human growth hormone — the 191-amino-acid molecule itself. In research it supplies GH directly rather than stimulating endogenous production. See our HGH research overview.

Secretagogues: prompting natural release

Growth hormone secretagogues are peptides that signal the pituitary to release its own GH. They fall into two broad groups: GHRH analogs and ghrelin-mimetic GH-releasing peptides.

GHRH analogs: Sermorelin, CJC-1295, Tesamorelin

CJC-1295 and tesamorelin are GHRH analogs studied for their longer-acting stimulation of GH release. Sermorelin is the shorter-acting GHRH fragment. These mimic the body's own releasing hormone.

Ghrelin mimetics: Ipamorelin

Ipamorelin works on a separate, complementary pathway. Because GHRH analogs and ghrelin mimetics act through different receptors, they are often studied together — the basis of the popular CJC-1295 and ipamorelin combination.

Direct vs secretagogue: the key trade-off

The central distinction in the literature is that direct HGH supplies the hormone exogenously, while secretagogues stimulate pulsatile, endogenous release that follows the body's own feedback loops. Which approach a study uses depends on the research question.
